PANEL #1: THE FUTURE OF TALENT REPRESENTATION IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY

Hollywood and Bollywood represent the two major entertainment capitals of the world. Increasingly, these two media centers are interacting to bring their unique talents to the global marketplace. For example, along with the success of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, Indian conglomerate Reliance recently made a significant equity investment in Dreamworks. Indian-American producer Ashok Amritraj recently released his 100th film. In addition to India’s corporatization trends, actors are now performing on a global stage such as Indian film icon Anil Kapoor of SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE acting in this season’s 24 on Fox, Mexican soap star Barbara Mori and Brazilian model Giselle Monteiro both starring in Bollywood films. Despite this progress, India does not have the same system of talent representation as the United States. In this program, a panel of leading experts will explore talent representation in a time of unprecedented growth and globalization of the entertainment industry.

DEMO PRESENTATION: RELIANCE MEDIAWORKS PRESENTATION

Reliance MediaWorks brings us a presentation of their work on special effects and visual design in film. Reliance MediaWorks collaborated with groundbreaking director James Cameron on his pioneering 20th Century Fox 3-D feature film AVATAR. They applied their expertise and proprietary technology to enhance the film's imagery, helping to deliver a unified look across the various types of footage in the movie by matching the dramatic live action, composited effects sequences, and computer generated imagery.

PANEL #2: ALTERNATIVE DISTRIBUTION PLATFORMS: TECHNOLOGY IN SEARCH OF A BUSINESS MODEL

Only a decade ago, creators of entertainment content fell into two categories: theatrical and television. With the development of additional distribution mechanisms, a systemic method was developed consisting of windows where a theatrical release was followed by DVDs, airlines, cable and television. In today’s creative environment, content creators realize that the very same content can potentially be released simultaneously across numerous platforms. With the technology already in the hands of the consumer, distributors are beginning to take stock of the business opportunities. This panel will explore questions facing the industry about the future of existing windows of distribution, the viability of economic formulas such as dynamic pricing, piracy implications and whether filmmakers need to approach their craft and distribution models differently.

Moderator: Blair Westlake, Corporate Vice President, Media & Entertainment Group, Microsoft Corp
David Wertheimer, Executive Director, Entertainment Technology Center, University of Southern California
Nick DeMartino, Senior Vice President of Media and Technology, American Film Institute
Peter Broderick, President, Paradigm Consulting
