Strongly prohibited by the state, sex between blacks, “coloreds”, and whites in Apartheid South Africa was not only illegal, but also a complex form of political rebellion against the regime. In this funny and personal film, Yunus Vally recounts the difficulty of growing up in a world where white women defined notions of beauty and existed as objects of desire in mass media, but were forbidden by law and society. Vally attempts to find the deeper logic behind the seemingly illogical emotions of desire, lust and love. Through memories of his orthodox Muslim youth, interviews with former lovers and friends, and a collection of evocative images, Vally tries to uncover the meanings of the passions of his time and their ramifications for the future.
