The year is 1937 and tea plantation owner Henry Moores and his able assistant T.K. Neelan are beginning a financially risky venture to build a road up into the dense jungle mountains to access the untapped wealth of spices. But the discovery of Moores’ illicit affair with his servant Sajani, as well as the arrival of his wife Laura, threatens to destroy his relationship with the local villagers he’s dependent on to complete work on the road he’s invested all his money into.

Set in Kerala as the British hold on India has begun to wane, BEFORE THE RAINS has echoes of A Passage to India, Burmese Days and other literary evocations of the final days of the Raj. But as crime and betrayal drive the story to its inevitable conclusion, the film also takes on the feel of a “colonial noir” with Santosh Sivan’s exquisite cinematography and Mark Kilian’s haunting score providing a lush, epic backdrop for this simple morality tale.

BEFORE THE RAINS marks the English language debut of renowned director and cinematographer Santosh Sivan.
