Whose Children Are These? USA/2004/27 min/Beta SP
Directors: Theresa Thanjan Theresa Thanjan, a social worker-activist-advocate turned filmmaker attempts to answer the titular question through the stories of three Muslim youth impacted by the federal program of Special Registration and prejudice in post 9/11 America. Thanjan introduces Navila, whose family is devastated by the detention of her father; Mohammad, a teen facing deportation; and Hagar who is spurred into activism as a result of circumstances. Special Registration, a Department of Justice program, required men from 25 predominately Muslim countries to register with the U.S. government with the intention of monitoring and capturing suspected terrorists. The program has missed its aim, yet some 14,000 men have faced deportation proceedings as a result.
