There are no witches in this Hindi version of Macbeth, updated to the present-day underworld of Mumbai. Instead, the future is predicted by two corrupt policemen, brilliantly played by Om Puri and Naseeruddin Shah.

This is Bharadwaj's somewhat romanticized version of a crime family and, like many Mafia tales, is filled with murder, greed and betrayal, along with a hint of ethics and humanity. But it is Maqbool's (Macbeth's) own lust for power and the ensuing emotional consequences that are at the core of story.

Irrfan Khan and Tabu lead a stellar cast under Bharadwaj's excellent direction of this highly regarded feature film. From the non-stop, fast-paced action of the opening sequence, the viewer is compelled to watch until the final frames roll off the screen.
