Director: Rituparno Ghosh Aishwarya Rai gives a radiant performance as Binodini, a well-educated young widow forced to adhere to the strict moral code of a solitary and menial life in turn-of-the-century Bengal. She is brought to stay at a mansion owned by a family friend. There, she befriends two men, Behari and Mahendra, and Mahendra's naïve young wife, Ashlata. The multifarious relationships that develop among the four soon spark a sensual and moral conflict, as Binodini transcends the traditional role imposed upon her and embarks on an affair with Mahendra. Adapted from a novel by Bengali writer Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), director Rituparno Ghosh's cinematic rendition delivers an understated "passion play," rife with a series of shifting triangles and handled with sophistication and consummate craft.
