A bus travels slowly along a twisting mountain road. Among the passengers are a married woman, traveling with her infant son, and a single male photographer. They are newly acquainted, and he is asked to look after her until their destination has been reached. Bedlam and violence ensue when traffic is halted by Hindu extremists who seek revenge on the Muslims who burned down their village.

Director Aparna Sen has captured the humanity that surfaces during extreme conditions, where life and death decisions are made in an instant, forbidden emotions surface, and the protector becomes the protected.
