Award-winning writer/director Dev Benegal (SPLIT WIDE OPEN) has succeeded yet again with his new film ROAD, MOVIE, which premiered to rave reviews at this year's Toronto and Berlin film festivals. This beautiful, meditative coming-of-age drama masterfully blends themes of love, friendship, danger, wonder and whimsy in a young man's journey across the bleak and otherworldly majesty of the Rajasthani desert.
Tired of his coddled existence helping his father sell the family blend of hair oil in the markets of Jodhpur, Vishnu (Abhay Deol) takes a job driving a traveling cinema housed in an ancient truck across the endless desert to its new home in a city by the sea. Chronic engine troubles force him to team up with a resourceful young boy and an elderly mechanic (Satish Kaushik) who agrees to keep the truck running in exchange for a ride to an elusive desert fair. Taking pity on a fellow lost traveler - a beautiful widow played by Tannishtha Chatterjee - they soon add a fourth member to their party. Lost and nearly out of water, the foursome traverse the desert and have a series of encounters with the police, gypsies and bandits that test their resilience and their compassion. ROAD, MOVIE is an unforgettable odyssey that reminds us how truly wondrous life can be and that magic can be found in the most unexpected of places.
