In June 1985, Bombay-bound Air India flight 182 exploded off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people aboard. In the wake of Indira Ghandi’s assassination in 1984, the air attack shocked everyone, even though the Vancouver-based Sikh separatists behind it were under surveillance by Canadian law enforcement and intelligence agencies for months. Through intimate interviews with the victims’ family members and Canadian officials, reenactments, and haunting images, AIR INDIA 182 reconstructs the critical events leading up to and following the tragedy. By documenting the testimony and suffering of those who stood witness to this opening act of international terrorism in North America, the film illuminates the complex questions of national identity, counter-terrorism and political fanaticism still with us today.
