Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta’s latest film tells the story of Chand, a young woman who leaves behind her family in India when she’s married off to a Punjabi immigrant living outside of Toronto. Upon arrival as Chand finds herself living in a cramped house with three generations of in-laws and two additional tenants. She soon becomes the target of her abusive husband and his family’s misguided frustrations. But this is far from a simple story about spousal abuse. Mehta’s film takes a bold stylistic detour as Chand retreats into fantasy to deal with her oppressive situation.

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta gives a captivating performance as Chand, one that is more reminiscent of a Tennessee Williams character than the heroines she has played in her many Hindi blockbusters. With her illuminating performance, Zinta gives the world a glimpse of what to hope for from her in the future.
