Director: Rajat Kapoor MIXED DOUBLES is an important film to come out of India today. It challenges the status quo escapism of Bollywood fare while maintaining a sharp comedic flare. It also serves as a social commentary on India ’s contemporary middle class - a highly educated, professional, savvy consumer base thrusting India into the global economy. They seem to have it all and yet are restless and not happy to be content. Sunil and Malati are a loving middle class couple living with their young son in Mumbai. After ten years of marriage, they are comfortably content with their life, yet boredom and complacency have settled into their marital bedroom. Sunil sinks to elaborate schemes to avoid making love with his wife. One day he finds a titillating solution to their problem in a personal ad in the local newspaper. While he is convinced that it is the spark that will rekindle their flame of desire, it will take much more to persuade Malati to take part in a round of mixed doubles. Hindi (English subtitles) |
