“Black is a tribute to man's instinct for survival. It's about the spirit of a human being going from darkness to light...a human being in search of excellence.” Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Michelle McNally, a deaf, blind and mute girl inhabits a world of infinite black. By the sheer will of her fierce rage against destiny, she struggles to stay afloat in the impenetrable void that is her life. Into this isolated world enters battle weary teacher, Debraj Sahai. With single-minded determination, Devraj takes up the challenge of ushering in the ray of light that will penetrate through the darkness of Michelle’s life.

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali acknowledges a debt to the life and triumphs of Helen Keller. After reading her book and visiting the Helen Keller Institute for the Deaf and Blind he became committed to telling a story that went beyond the depictions of the physically challenged in his previous feature, Khamoshi – The Musical. Black is the culmination of Bhansali’s meticulous direction, astonishing camera work from Ravi Chandran and the powerful performances of Amitabh Bachchan, Ayesha Kapur and Rani Mukherjee.
