Winner of FIPRESCI award Venice Film Festival 2003.

Due to rampant female infanticide, women are basically extinct in this tale about rural India in the future.

A young woman is discovered living under her father's close protection, when a widower with five sons offers the father a tremendous cash dowry for the girl. The father agrees to allow his daughter to marry all the sons, not realizing that she will become the victim of an entire community. Tulip Joshi's stirring performance as the suffering bride and brutalized sex slave is agonizing to watch. It is the violence and abuse that prevails in this rural society that eventually causes its own moral collapse.
