Director: Rituparno Ghosh Tribute honoree Kirron Kher won India's best actress National Award for her portrayal of Bonolata, a lonely, middle-aged woman experiencing financial hardship who rents her ancestral home to a director and his crew while they shoot a film. Bonolata lives with her servants in a large, empty house. The environment is tainted by the sorrow of many deaths and we experience her vast sadness as she drifts about the mansion and grounds. It is a welcome relief to suddenly have activity in the house and as she becomes more attracted to the film's director, her heart begins to open. She is anxious for information once the crew departs, and is devastated when she receives disturbing news about the film. Rituparno Ghosh's direction is extremely subtle in sensitively exploring loneliness, the fragility of human emotions and the transitory nature of relationships.
